Why 'value-first' posts outperform pitches on Reddit
Think about how you browse Reddit yourself. When a post starts with a glossy announcement, you scroll past. When a post starts with 'We lost 30% of signups on step two of onboarding until we noticed this one log line', you stop and read.
Specific stories earn upvotes and comments because they give the reader something useful whether or not they ever buy from you.
Three post formats that work in almost any niche
You do not need to invent a literary masterpiece twice a week. Rotate between three simple field-note formats:
- The post-mortem: a mistake you made, what it cost in time or money, and the exact change that fixed it.
- The teardown: how you solved a recurring operational job (with the numbers or steps shown).
- The open question: a genuine trade-off you are weighing right now, asking peers how they handled it.
Keep a human rhythm: two or three days a week
Posting at 09:00 sharp every Monday, Wednesday and Friday looks like a scheduled corporate queue. Posting two or three times a week on slightly different days looks like a founder who shares a note when they have something worth saying.
Relead's monthly calendar picks two or three random days per week across your communities for exactly that reason.
How to write without sounding like an AI or a marketer
Drop the throat-clearing intros ('In today's fast-paced world...'), the emoji checklists, the hashtags and the em dashes. Use short sentences, name the real numbers, and write the way you would explain the problem to a friend over coffee.
Let the product come up in the comments
A great community post does not need a link in the body. In fact, leaving the link out of the post keeps you compliant with strict subreddit rules and makes readers curious. When someone asks in the comments what you are working on or how you automated that step, you have a warm invitation to answer.
Be the person people ask about, not the person people scroll past.
Take it with you
- Share a concrete situation, a number, a mistake and the fix.
- Write in plain paragraphs like a peer, never in marketing bullet points.
- Two or three posts a week on varied days beat a noisy daily blast.
- End your post with a real question that invites others to share their approach.
- Answer the comments promptly; that is where trust and curiosity turn into clicks.
